Hi Folks.. Welcome to my teaching page. Michelle and I have recently relocated to Dunnellon Fl, so there's a whole new area to explore, play and teach in. Currently I'm splitting my teaching between my home lesson studio in Dunnellon, Hoggtowne Music in Gainesville, and soon at Rockiversity in Ocala. Having been a full time guitar teacher for the past 13 years, I've taught roughly 15,000 private lessons. My focus has always been to introduce important musical and technical concepts while using music which appeals to each student. Needless to say, there's no such thing as one approach to teaching guitar. It depends on the student and the teacher. Together we look where you are and where you want to go. I believe it's possible and "preferable" to use the musical style and songs that excite you as a listener. By working on something you enjoy, it's possible to actually LOVE to practice. What a concept! While it's important to have command of chords and scales, the trick is to discover these elements in real songs and not just in exercises. If the student doesn't see the relevance of what they are working on, it's unlikely they'll put in the time and effort necessary to absorb the techniques presented.
There are two main goals for all of my clients.
First: To play 10 songs of their choosing, front to back.
Second: To be able to play music with other musicians. ( aka Jamming )
The last point is often overlooked. One of the real joys of being a musician, is to share in a musical conversation with other players.
As a teacher, I don't pretend my methods and concepts are purely my own. The late Howard Roberts was a pioneer in guitar education from the 1960's through the 80's. He had a gift of explaining musical concepts in simple ways, reducing what appeared to be a complex endeavor, into small isolated and easily learnable techniques. One of his main points, which I try to encourage in my own lessons, is to know precisely what you are suppose to do, before you attempt to do it. That approach drastically reduces mistakes and makes for a more enjoyable learning experience. In short, I hope to inspire my students to have the joy of discovering the musician inside themselves. I hope you'll join me on that journey.
